Lalit Modi Wiki: Lalit Modi is an Indian businessman. He is a cricket administrator and founded the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008 as its first president and commissioner. He was appointed Chairman of the Champions League in2008 and held the position until 2010. Based in Modi nagar, Uttar Pradesh, the Modi Group business empire was founded in 1933 by his grandfather Gujar Mal Modi. The business was taken over and expanded by Lalit’s father, his KK Modi. Lalit Modi then began working as President and CEO of Modi Enterprises and CEO of Godfrey Phillips India.

Lalit Modi is a cricket manager and businessman from India. He studied electrical engineering and business administration, but did not graduate. He joined the family business in 1986. In 1987, he became president of the International He Tobacco Company Limited, a position he held until 1991. He became a Non-Independent and Non-Executive Director of Godfrey Phillips India. In 1992 he was appointed Managing Director of one of India’s largest tobacco companies. He founded Modi Entertainment Networks in his 1993.

Career

Lalit Modi served as President of International Tobacco Company Limited from 1987 to 1991. He was subsequently appointed as a Non-Executive and Non-Independent Director of Godfrey Phillips India on 21st August 1989. He was appointed Managing Director of Godfrey He Phillips India in February 1992 and until August 1, 2010. In 1993 Walt He founded Disney He Pictures and Modi He Entertainment Network (MEN), with which he has been affiliated for ten years. Together they founded a new channel ‘Fashion TV’. Partnered with ESPN in 1994. Years later, however, ESPN terminated Modi’s contract, accusing him of embezzling earnings. In 2002, he founded Sixo, an online lottery company in Kerala.

BCCI

During his time in the United States, Lalit Modi was fascinated by the enormous income generated by American sports leagues and in 1995 he offered the BCCI a contract for a 50-over cricket tournament. He then proposed the name ‘Indian Cricket League Limited’ for a contract with BCCI, but his proposal was rejected by BCCI. After this refusal, Lalit Modi decided to join BCCI’s management team. In 1991 Himachal his Pradesh Cricket Association elected him to its board of directors.

He then wanted to retain control of the club, but the then Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh removed him from his board position. In 2004, the Punjab State Cricket Association appointed Lalit Modi as Vice President until 2008. From 2005 until 2010 she served as Vice-Chairman of the Indian Cricket Control Board (BCCI). From 2005 until 2009 he served as President of the Rajasthan State Cricket Association. During the 2005 BCCI presidential election, Lalit Modi helped Congress leader Sharad Pawar defeat Jagmohan Darmiya. BCCI’s revenues under the Lalit Modi government reportedly totaled $1 billion from 2005 to 2008. From 2014 to 2015 he served as Vice President of the Punjab Cricket Association.

Suspension from BCCI

After the 2010 IPL season, Lalit Modi was suspended by the BCCI. BCCI has accused him of misconduct in management, lack of discipline and financial misconduct. In 2013, he was found guilty of all charges brought by BCCI, but he denied all charges against himself. During the trial, Lalit Modi said he was a victim of political rivalry. The BCCI then requested an Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation into him, resulting in his flight from India to London. In the same year, eight more indictments were filed against him by then BCCI Vice President and BJP Chairman Arun Jaitley, parliamentary leaders Jyotiradhitya Scindia and Chirayu Amin among others.

Rajasthan Politics and Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA)

Lalit Modi held an important position in Rajasthan politics during the tenure of Prime Minister Vasundhara Rajeh. After that, some opposition parties and the media often called him a “super prime minister.” In 2005, on the advice of Lalit Modi, Vasundhara Raje passed the Rajasthan State Sports Act and was appointed President of the Rajasthan State Cricket Association (RCA) after a vote of the Board. He defeated his opponent Kishore Lunta by just one vote. For over 30 years, RCA has been run by his Rungta family of entrepreneurs.

Shortly after taking office as RCA president, Lalit Modi reportedly spent Rs. On 6th May 2014, Lalit Modi was reinstated to the Rajasthan State Cricket Association (RCA) as President. During this time he stayed in London. However, his appointment was immediately rescinded by the BCCI, and he was also banned by the BCCI after the RCA appointed a special agency to manage its functions. In March 2015, he attempted to join the RCA again, but 17 of the 23 members voted against it in the RCA presidential ballot, leaving five supporters late to vote.

Lalit Modi founded the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. The following year he made a determined effort to bring the IPL from India to South Africa. Lalit Modi Controversies

  • He pulled in debate when he didn’t permit IAS official Mahendra Surana to enter the Sawai Mansingh Arena to watch a cricket match in 2007. Lalit Modi, according to various media sources, assumed that Mahendra Surana had some connections to the Rungta family, which held RCA prior to 2007.
  • In 2009, he again didn’t permit R.P. Srivastava, an IPS official in a similar cricket arena. Around the same time, during a cricket match at the Sawai Mansingh Arena, he slapped a police constable who strolled into his container.
  • In January 2009, Lalit Modi spent a few hours at a police headquarters in Mumbai after a body of evidence was enlisted against him by a Samajwadi Party extremist.
