About UPPSC
The East India Company’s powers were under British control when the British took control of India in 1858. This proclamation was read out by Queen Victoria by the then-Viceroy Lord Canning at Minto Park in Allahabad in November 1858. At the same time, Allahabad was made the capital of India for a day. The British had established the High Court, Allahabad University, and numerous other institutions in Allahabad, which was also the capital of the North West Province at the time.
The Public Service Commission 1886-87 divided the administrative services into three categories (1) Indian Civil Services (ICS), (2) Provincial Civil Services (PCS), and (3) Subordinate Services. The last two were to be filled exclusively by Indians. These were to be filled either through examinations or through nominations, subject to the rules made by the Government of India. As complexities grew, and services were created, the system was not found to be sufficient. This was followed by the Government of India Act of 1919, in which section 96D provided for the classification of various services and the methods of recruitment to each, but that too was found to be insufficient. Therefore, in June 1923, a Royal Commission on Superior Civil Services in India was appointed under Lord Lee of Ferham.
