Vivo V27 Pro Review

Last year Vivo launched the V23 Pro. This is a smartphone with a color-changing back cover that makes the mid-range segment more interesting. The idea behind it is simple: make buyers fall in love with smartphones again. But while the idea was flashy, the rest of the package felt a little disappointing. The V25 Pro soon followed, with updated specs, but offering much less value when compared to its performance-focused competitors at the same price.

A few weeks ago Vivo launched his new V27 Pro, a phone that has been completely redesigned in many ways. It’s powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8200 processor that we’ve seen and loved before in the iQOO Neo 7. It also has a primary camera sensor Sony IMX766V specially designed for better night shots. The game is certainly an improvement over its predecessor, but is it worth the starting price of 37,999 rupees? Find out in our review.

Vivo V27 Pro Review: Design and build

Staying true to the V-series DNA, the Vivo V27 Pro features a slim form factor and a notoriously slippery back panel. However, compared to other glass sandwiches, it was very light to hold and I was happy to be able to carry it in my pocket. The V27 Pro has the same curved front and back as its predecessor, but with a slightly different camera island. This time, the shooting time of the ring flash is longer.

The tanning madness continues here, too, in a variation of Magic Blue. Its light blue color is darkened by UV light. Some may find it cheap, some may like it, but as long as you carry it around without a case, everyone notices it. The texture on the back makes it difficult for smudges and fingerprints to stick to it, but the problem is that the opaque fingers block the UV rays that hit the back, leaving fingerprint shadows visible. If you don’t like that, you can also opt for the more discreet Noble Black version.

Vivo knows the target audience it wants to sell this smartphone to: people who prefer tactile feel to paper specs, and people who don’t trust online platforms when buying a smartphone. So given its price, it should be one of the premium phones.

Vivo doesn’t officially say anything about the screen protector used, nor does it mention the phone’s IP certification. We took the phone for a walk on a rainy day and so far there has been no water ingress, but please take this anecdote with caution.

Vivo V27 Pro Review: Display and audio

The Vivo V27 Pro features a brilliant, gently curved diagonal 6.78-inch AMOLED 10-bit display. Despite the panel’s massive size, which is only better than the mighty S23 Ultra, it feels surprisingly manageable considering the phone is so tall and slim. With a refresh rate of 120 Hz, it accepts input very well and is bright enough even outdoors, but Vivo doesn’t give us any information about the brightness value. He also remained silent about his HDR or Dolby certification of the device.

When it comes to viewing content, Netflix runs in Full HD, but without HDR playback. Same with prime video. Additionally, when playing HDR content on YouTube, the phone automatically reverts to lower brightness, which cannot be changed by disabling auto-brightness. This can be frustrating when looking at things outdoors. Still, being the quintessential Vivo-tuning AMOLED display, the colors are nice and bold.

Its sprawling display is accompanied by a single mono speaker, which is a disappointment at this price point. It’s loud, but watching videos or playing games without the second speaker can be a bit muffled.

Vivo V27 Pro Review: Camera

Besides the slim profile and color-changing design, the V27 Pro’s next major selling point is its optically stabilized triple camera system with a ring flash module called ‘Aura Light’.

The Sony IMX766 is the goto primary sensor for most affordable flagship and mid-range smartphones on the market today, and for good reason. It offers excellent night-time performance while maintaining a high-definition output.

The V27 Pro uses a customized version of this sensor called IMX766V and is specifically tuned for night photography. This includes an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 2-megapixel macro. Thanks to its various features, it makes taking pictures a little more fun than other sober smartphones. For example, there is a wedding photography mode that enhances skin texture and enhances colors to give the impression of an Indian wedding. To use it, you’ll have to dive into portrait mode, tap “Style” and then select “Wedding.” Here are her 3 LUTs (lookup tables) that you can cycle through by tapping the Wedding button multiple times. This edition may be of interest to wedding photographers who don’t want to spend money on a specialty or flagship camera.

There is also a night portrait mode using the Auralight flash system. The main purpose is to have a gentle but intense flash of light on the subject’s face. It is also said to reduce redness in the eyes. Flash photography is trending, so it’s great to see a mobile phone maker taking advantage of his Flash photography. The output will be a mixed bag. In very low light, the subject’s face may appear yellow because the flash is too weak and too warm.

Aside from those special modes, daytime shooting was very good. I expected the output to emphasize the blues and greens, but it didn’t. Everything was very real. The details were also very nice.

An ultra-wide-angle camera provides a more predictable experience. It works well during the day and can take detailed shots, but in low light it performs poorly,

resulting in muddy and noisy shots. The promise of a customized main sensor for night time is also kept. In fact, the sensor takes better exposed photos and the software does an excellent job of reducing graininess. In fact, this is he one of the few camera systems that doesn’t make the night sky look too bright.

A macro camera is usually treated as an added feature on most smartphones, but we found it useful. The purple fringing effect was negligible, which was good, but the resolution was still very sharp.

Vivo V27 Pro Review: Hardware and performance

The Vivo V27 Pro is only the second Indian smartphone to use MediaTek’s Dimensity 8200 processor. The first smartphone is Game Champion’s iQOO Neo 7. As such, they share many common features, such as good heat dissipation and, in some cases, decent performance on demand, and are capable of handling heavy workloads. It may be routine for consoles like the Neo 7, but in this context the V27 Pro looks like a pretty little diva who wows with powerlifting.

Paired with the processor are his three storage his variants of 8GB/128GB, 8GB/256GB and 12GB/256GB. Unfortunately, it doesn’t mention what kind of storage or RAM is used, but if I follow the benchmark app closely, it could be UFS 3.1 storage and LPDDR4X RAM. The Vivo V27 Pro scored 843,587 on AnTuTu v9, slightly lower than the Neo 7. However, in Geekbench v5 it scored 1,009 and 3,910 for single-core and multi-core respectively.

Vivo’s Fun Touch OS 13 based on Android 13 has also arrived. So far I’ve received two that fixed the bug and added a wedding mode to the camera app. The user interface is also very similar to Neo 7. Bloatware sits high on the spectrum, along with Hot Apps and Hot Games. Many of them can be disabled, but ads are scattered throughout the interface, and you’ll have to spend hours getting a cleaned-up experience without asking for permission to display ads.

Otherwise, transitions between apps were smooth in everyday use, and we didn’t observe any major stutters when running Maps or YouTube in PiP mode. Too many customization options neatly organized in his one menu in the Settings app. Material You for Android 13 is also here, allowing you to match the font color to your wallpaper.

Another cool thing they added is a dynamic wallpaper with flowers. What’s so different about it? Flowers start blooming when you reach your daily step goal. Unfortunately, it was buggy during our testing period and failed to track steps. I also haven’t found a way to give permission to the pedometer.

The fingerprint sensor is placed a little too deep under the display for our liking, but authentication succeeds most of the time.

Vivo V27 Pro Review: Battery life and charging

The vivo V27 Pro comes with a 4,500mAh battery, which can be charged with the included 66W FlashCharger. The battery numbers might seem lower than average given that most smartphones these days are powered by his 5,000mAh battery, but this actually keeps the device slim and light. helps.

However, there are some pleasant surprises here as well. First, the screen has about 7 hours of on-time, which is good for such a capacity. In practical use, this equates to about a day’s worth of backups. A full charge takes about 45-50 minutes, which isn’t too bad. Finally, in the evening he charges for 15 minutes and can easily avoid range anxiety when partying on a weekend night.

Vivo V27 Pro Review: Verdict

The Vivo V27 Pro brings a nice pop of color and trendiness to the hardware-conscious crowd. The slim, lightweight form factor, color-changing back panel, and gently curved display will cheer you up after a dull day. Despite having a lower battery capacity than usual, it offers decent backup performance and charges fairly quickly. There are also some highlights that are great for nighttime photography, and the new Wedding Capture Mode is a nice addition as well. Oh, and the new Dimensity 8200 can handle some heavy workloads effortlessly. Those giant green flags are enough to justify how much better it is than its predecessor.

But when you look at the starting price of Rs 37,999, you start thinking about the little things that seem to be missing. For example, it doesn’t claim to be waterproof, dustproof, or protective glass. Bloatware at this price is frowned upon. Also, Netflix lacks stereo speaker setups and HDR playback.

Speaking of alternatives, the iQOO Neo 7 is a great value for money offering more value to traditional buyers with more focus on performance and speed. If you want to go the other way from a design standpoint and have your phone emit light rather than absorb it, you can also consider Nothing Phone (1).

Conclusion

The Vivo V27 Pro is a smartphone that truly lives up to its name as a specialist. With its impressive camera, powerful performance, and sleek design, it is clear that Vivo has put a lot of thought into creating a device that caters to the needs of modern users. Whether you’re a social media influencer or simply someone who enjoys taking high-quality photos and videos, the V27 Pro is definitely worth considering. Overall, this smartphone is a great choice for those looking for a device that can keep up with their fast-paced lifestyle.
